Area details
Preston is a small village and suburb of Weymouth, approximately 2 miles east of the town. The 14th century St Andrews church was built on the site of an earlier Norman Church and is worth a visit. The area is probably best known for Bowleaze Cove, a sand and shingle beach that is a popular family beach in the summer that also has a slipway for lauching small craft. There are many rock pools to explore at low tide and the area is popular for fishing. The cove also provides excellent views over Weymouth and is also home to the Riviera Hotel. Bowleaze Cove was painted by John Constable on his honeymoon and the painting now hangs in the National Gallery. Overcombe corner is a popular spot for windsurfers and gets some nice swells when the wind is in the right direction.
