Located in Fortuneswell, Dorset
Seagull Cottage is a holiday cottage on Portland, Dorset, that sleeps four adults and a child that specialises in accommodating sailors.
Seagull Cottage is specifically designed and equipped for the needs of sailors and their support teams. It is located just one mile from the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, the 2012 Olympic Sailing venue. The WPNSA is easily accessible on foot (15 mins), by cycle (5 mins), or by car.
From the outside Seagull Cottage is a traditional, terraced cottage dating from about 1900. It is tucked away in a quiet backwater of Fortuneswell (DT5 1JQ), off the main traffic routes, and yet only moments away from the High Street with its shops and pubs. Inside the cottage has been modernised and equipped to the highest standards of comfort and convenience.
We know how important catering facilities are for sailors, and the fitted kitchen is fully equipped with a comprehensive range of appliances and equipment. These include twin electric ovens, gas hob (with extractor), fridge / freezer, dishwasher, and washing machine. The kitchen equipment includes everything from a corkscrew to a wok. There is a comprehensive range of crockery, cutlery, glasses and tableware, as well as small electric appliances such as kettle and toaster. Although there is a dishwasher to take care of most of the dishes, somebody will still have to wash up at the kitchen sink, but at least they will have the rooftop and sea view of Lyme Bay to look out on while they are working!
The spacious open plan living room provides comfortable living and relaxation space. There is a large, flat screen TV (92 channels) which has sockets for video cameras to be plugged in - ideal for video debriefings. There is also a DVD player, and a stereo system (CD / radio / iPod). There are plenty of power points for plugging in laptops etc. There are two comfortable sofas arranged around a large coffee table, which is ideal for team meetings.
The dining table seats up to six people comfortably, and is under a window with roof top and sea views. Wi-fi wireless networking available as Seagull Cottage is in range of BT Fon and BT Openzone "hotspots". If you already have a BT or certain other European broadband accounts this is free, otherwise you can buy online time by the hour, day or week.
The bathroom has a double sized shower and an antique "slipper" style bath. There is a heated towel rail and radiator. The "combi" boiler in the kitchen provides unlimited hot water (N.b. "Fair use" policy applies) as well as central heating throughout the house.
Seagull Cottage has two bedrooms. The master bedroom has a double and a single bed, and the twin room has twin beds, one of which can be folded down and stowed under the other bed if not required. The single bed in the double room also has a pull out bed underneath it, so you can potentially have three separate beds in the master bedroom. There is a small flat-screen TV in the master bedroom. The combination of double and single / pull-out beds means there are a flexible range of sleeping options (e.g. 2 2, 3 1, 3 2), subject to the strict proviso that the accommodation is for a maximum of four adults ( one child). The twin room offers attractive views over rooftops and Lyme Bay.
We know that washing and drying facilities are essential for sailors. As well as the automatic washing machine in the kitchen, there is a sink in the basement for rinsing off salty kit, and a tumble drier. Outside there is a washing line for hanging kit out to dry. Outside there is a small courtyard garden with table and chairs. The garden is a real sun trap, and an ideal place to enjoy well-deserved refreshments after a hard day on the water. There is free on-street parking outside Seagull Cottage, and two free car parks within a few hundred metres.
Fortuneswell covers quite a large area, really from the Heights Hotel at the top of the island with its amazing views along Chesil Beach to the bottom of the hill where it blends into Chiswell. As you descend from the Heights you will see a statue by artist and sculptor Joanna Szuwalska title "The Spirit of Portland". Fortuneswell has many shops and along High Street you will be able to find "Isle of Portland Statues" for sale, all hand made.Read more
Once again the walking from Fortuneswell is good but do remember you are on a slope so even if the walking is easy on the way down remember the walk back! Chesil Beach is easily accessable from Fortuneswell, but turning up the hill gives you many different options for some interesting walks to the top of the island.
There are several pubs, restaurants and takeaways all available within Fortuneswell so you should find something to suit both your taste and pocket and all within walking distance.Read less
