Area details
Wakeham is full of traditional quarryman's cottages dating back two to three hundred years. Although a small area it is packed with interest. Pennsylvania castle was built in 1800 by John Penn, grandson of the founder of Pennsylvania, and is now a private residence. Just round the corner from this is the Portland Museum, Rufus Castle, the ruins of St Andrews Church with its "pirate" graves and onwards to Church Ope Cove.

A walk along the coast down to Portland Bill will take about 45 minutes depending on how long you stop to take in the views and the wildlife. Walks along the old railway line and back to the top of the island are also available from Wakeham.
The Hayloft Cafe is open throughout the summer season for coffees and light lunches. Otherwise, it is just a short walk into Easton where there are a number of choices or by car you can reach any of Portland's eating out establishments in under 5 minutes.
